When Amy Lee announced this project, I was filled with a lot of excitement. The idea of taking some of Evanescence's songs from over the years and reworking them with a full orchestra, plus a synth was something I had never even considered. Yet, it completely fit the layer of music that IS Evanescence.

Evanescence is and always has been far more than a simple rock band. Amy Lee and Ben Moody wrote electronic rock songs, or gorgeous piano pieces. After Ben Moody left, Amy continued on that path. It can be heard in "The Open Door" as much as "Origin" and the "Sound Asleep EP." Since breaking away from Wind-Up, Amy now had a chance to simply expand on that and do something she has always wanted to do.

The results are beautiful. The new songs "Hi-Lo" and "Imperfection" are a highlight to the entire album. New material is always appreciated, but, these two songs are nice to hear. Lindsey Stirling adds a great touch to "Hi-Lo." My favorite of the reworked songs are "Lost in Paradise," "Your Star," "Imaginary," "Secret Door," and "End of a Dream." I also had the chance to catch this album performed live on tough, which was the absolute best way to experience this sound. If you are a fan of old Evanescence (pre-Fallen) and a fan of orchestral albums, this is for you!

I got my CD at 12:30pm Friday 10 November. I played it all LOUD! As Loud as being center stage on Tuesday night, 7 November. I have a high end stereo system, my dream system. The sound crystal clear as a bell. Do not judge the production values by listening to a compressed source. I can hear every note, every subtlety, every intonation, and that crystal clear siren voice! Perfectly imaged as on the live stage. Piano left, strings left, brass and wood winds to the right, drums right behind Amy's left shoulder when she sings center stage. You know the songs. I won't review those, others can do a fine job of that.

On first listen at concert level volume of Never Go Back, my contacts floated.

If you treat this album as a standalone and do not make comparisons to the prior works, your perpective shifts. I like the rock versions of many of these songs. However, this orchestral presentation is fresh and intricate and Amy's voice is front and center (but not overwhelming) where a voice of that quality should be. I am not a big synth guy but here the synth flourishes that are added make for interesting twists.

My review consists of three separate reviews of the packaging, recording, and contents all averaged together. The packaging and contents (songs) both get five stars. The recording really screws the pooch though and gets 2 stars for an average of 4 stars. The packaging is not in the standard jewel case, but a more eco-friendly cardboard. There's a specific term for this style of case, but I don't know what it is. And for once, they did NOT put the stupid security sticker on the case itself!! It's on the shrinkwrap, so you don't have to worry about the adhesive damaging the artwork! YAY!! Why can others do this?? The songs themselves are all new reworks of Evanescence's popular songs sung by Amy Lee with a full orchestra. Very nicely done! Now the bad part...Unfortunately all of Evanescence's releases suffer from being overly processed to boost their loudness and Synthesis is part of this shameful list. Why in dog's name do the audio engineers have to push the loudness level through the roof and force it into distortion??? This is especially evident in "Lithium" which is one of my favorite songs. You know people, that is why we have amplifiers and volume controls - to increase the volume to our liking. We don't need you (the audio and mastering engineers) to do it for us!

This CD is simply amazing! I heard some of these remastered songs on You Tube and fell in love. This CD is so beautiful. It's more orchestra than loud electric guitar (which I also love those original versions). Lacrymosa, SECRET DOOR (wow!) and My Immortal are remastered to extreme perfection! I always thought Lithium was just OK until I heard this version. So much pain in the words and how she sings it, just beautiful! I did like the original version of Bring Me to Life better than this remastered version but it is still awesome. This CD just makes you fall in love with her massive gorgeous voice. Just perfection! All the other songs and instrumentals are just so -- I don't even know the words - beautiful, awesome, gorgeous!
