About Tilian

Alt-rock singer and songwriter Tilian Pearson incorporates elements of electropop into lush, melodic rock anthems under his solo moniker, Tilian. Leader of post-hardcore group Tides of Man in the late 2000s, he played with other bands on the Rise Records roster before staying on as co-lead singer of the harsher-sounding Dance Gavin Dance as of 2012. He has maintained a parallel career as a frontman and solo artist since releasing his first album as Tilian, Material Me, in 2013. A native of Clearwater, Florida, Pearson co-founded Tides of Man with lead guitarist Spencer Gill, rhythm guitarist Adam Sene, bass guitarist Alan Jaye, and drummer Josh Gould in Tampa in 2007. They released their debut album, Empire Theory, on Rise Records in 2009. Dreamhouse followed in 2010 before Pearson left the group that December. He went on to record and/or tour with various bands over the next couple of years, including Archives, Emarosa, and Saosin, before replacing Jonny Craig as the official "clean" vocalist for Dance Gavin Dance in 2012. Offering a brighter, more streamlined presentation devoid of the grungier sounds of his band, he released the solo album Material Me on Vital Records in early 2013. Later that year, Rise Records issued Dance Gavin Dance's Acceptance Speech, which featured Pearson and Jon Mess on vocals, Will Swan and Josh Benton on guitar, Tim Feerick on bass, and Matt Mingus on drums. It climbed into the Top 50 of the Billboard 200. The following year, Pearson released the solo EP Future Friends. After Benton parted ways with Dance Gavin Dance between albums, various guest guitarists filled in on 2015's Instant Gratification, which also made the U.S. Top 50, peaking at 32. That year, Tilian released his second full-length, Perfect Enemy. It reached number 13 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart. The Dance Gavin Dance live LP Tree City Sessions followed a year later, and their Top 15 album Mothership arrived in 2017, the same year Tilian issued the EP Patient. The year 2018 brought both Tilian's and his band's biggest chart successes to that point. The latter's Artificial Selection hit number 13 on the Billboard 200, and Tilian's The Skeptic -- his solo debut on Rise -- became a Top 25 alternative album and reached the Top Ten of the independent and Heatseekers albums charts. ~ Marcy Donelson
